Galantines Day—Hearts for Teal

Teal hearts dangled from my lighted mantle in honor of Galentine’s Day—a Zoom Valentine’s Day celebration with fellow ovarian cancer survivors, my teal sisters. The director of the Wisconsin Ovarian Cancer Alliance (WOCA) invited me to read a few selections from my book, In Her Shoes: Dancing in the Shadow of Cancer and then share my writing journey.

The selections I chose featured my struggles transitioning from an RN caring for patients to becoming the patient. I shared how I grappled with my diagnosis, chemotherapy and the side effects of the drugs. But even in the midst of a devastating diagnosis, I learned to have fun.

After a time for questions and answers, we followed up with Joanie trivia—true or false.

  • Is my favorite genre romantic comedy?
  • Was I a recipe contest winner?
